Acoustic Management: Mastering Sound Quality in Large Marquees

Controlling the “Echo Chamber” Effect

Large marquees, while visually stunning, can be challenging environments for audio. Because they are constructed from hard PVC fabric and (often) concrete or boarded flooring, they act as reflective surfaces that cause sound waves to bounce, creating echoes that make speeches unintelligible and music muddy. The key to professional sound management is to “soften” the interior. The most effective way to do this is through decorative draping—heavy, pleated fabric hung from the ceiling and walls significantly absorbs sound, preventing reverberation and making the interior feel more intimate and acoustically “tight.” If your event includes formal presentations, consider placing plush carpeting or a thick dance floor at the center of the tent to further dampen floor-level reflections.

Strategic Speaker Placement

Sound distribution is just as important as sound absorption. In large marquees, avoid using one massive speaker system at the front of the tent, which results in the people at the front being blasted with sound while those at the back hear nothing. Instead, utilize a “distributed audio” approach: use multiple smaller, high-clarity speakers positioned throughout the tent at lower volumes. This ensures even sound coverage across the entire space. Additionally, always keep speakers away from the reflective PVC sidewalls to minimize unwanted feedback. By combining smart acoustic dampening (drapes and carpets) with a distributed speaker setup, you ensure that every guest hears every word of your presentation with crystal clarity, regardless of where they are seated.
